de BIZET
ÓPERA 2001
Carmen is a French opera in four acts written by George Bizet (French musician and composer), having as librettists: Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. This opera was premiered in 1875, in Opéra-Comique in Paris.
Bizet writes Carmen based on a novel of the same name from the time of Prosper Mériméed. Although, the librettists have modified the characters, they keept Carmen as a free and seductive woman.
The story of the opera takes place in Spain and revolves around four main characters: Carmen, seductive gypsy who works in a cigarette factory and has freedom as her own symbol; Don José, a soldier, obsessed with Carmen and Micaela's fiancé; Micaela, Don José's fiancée who seeks throughout the opera to restore her fiancé's judgment and Escamillo, a bullfighter and Carmen's new love.
As well-known as the opera is nowadays, its debut was not a great success. The opera was considered scandalous, vulgar, immoral and inadequate for the society of the time.
